Quién eraWho she was

Ella, hablando — sube el volumen. Her, talking — turn the sound up.

Se llamaba Florinda. Casi nadie la llamaba así.Her name was Florinda. Almost nobody called her that.

She was abuelita, cucha, mami, amiga, hermana, vecina, florecita. A different name in every mouth that loved her, and all of them meant the same thing.

She was a joke teller, a candy hoarder, an independent wanderer, a loving grandma, a caring mother, a wonderful sister and a great companion.

Florinda Fernández was born on January 28th, 1934 in Socotá, and grew up with her sisters Lola, Mariela, Alicia and Ester and her brother Ivan. She served many as a nurse, and she was an entrepreneur too, selling items in a store she owned herself.

She lived a long, happy life that didn’t always follow an upward trajectory. She suffered through and endured great losses, and the people closest to her saw, every time, how strong her spirit was. She was unbreakable.

She dedicated the majority of her life to raising her daughter, and later spent six months of every year living in the U.S. helping raise her grandchildren, doing everything to show them as much love as she possibly could. She knew when to lighten the mood but also when those around her needed serious support.

She is survived by her daughter Jenny, son in-law Enrique and her grandchildren Camila and David who will all miss her dearly. May Christ, who called her, welcome her home, and may she rest in His eternal peace.

She left in peace on the night of Sunday, August 9, 2026, in Bogotá — without pain, with her family beside her.

RecuerdosMemories

Write to her here — a story, something she used to say, a recipe. She kept a notebook of her jokes; if you know one, tell it. Your message appears instantly and plants a flower in her garden.

Your name and where you are writing from sign the memory — she would want to know who wrote to her.

Gracias por mantener viva su memoriaThank you for keeping her memory alive

New Year’s, all of us with her.

Thank you to everyone who has already sent a photo, a video, or a few words. Every one of them brings her back for a while.

Many of you won’t be able to be in Bogotá this week, and that’s alright — this is the other way to be with her. If you have something of hers, send it. It doesn’t have to be a good photo or a long story — a line she used to say, an ordinary afternoon, the recipe she taught you.

Pass this link to anyone who loved her — family, neighbors, lifelong friends, people from her church. Each of them holds a piece of her the rest of us never saw.

This doesn’t close. Everything that arrives stays: this page is her memory, and it will be here next year and twenty years from now, for anyone who wants to see her again.
